Metro Nashville Police say officer Darrell Osment has been released from VUMC after he was shot and injured last night near Ashland City while walking his dog. Authorities say that a 13-year veteran of the Metro Nashville Police Department, Officer Darrell Osment, was walking his dog around 9:00 p.m. on May 21Then, according to police, the man who passed by Officer Osment produced a gun and shot the officer in the shoulder.The investigation has police wondering what may have motivated this alleged act, as there was no obvious sign that Officer Osment was a police officer. Police say that when a group of officers were engaged at the scene, Tonawanda Police Captain Fredric Foels said the initial report of the drive-by shooting came in at approximately 1:00 a.m. on May 26The status of that victim is currently unknown at this time.While the officers were working the scene, Captain Foels said that a gunman appeared at the scene and opened fire at all six officers present.
The unidentified officer was shot at 209 Morgan Street. While being a staunch and outspoken advocate of law enforcement and first responders, Gregory Hoyt also has the experience of having spent nearly 5 years in prison as well. His condition is not known.While officers were at the scene of the shooting, Captain Foels told 7 Eyewitness News the suspect came back to the scene, and that's when he opened fire on six police officers with a rifle. His fellow officers moved him behind a fire truck to shield him and themselves from gunfire.Foels went on to describe the shooting, as the suspect came down stairs and towards officers. Two officers pursued him, and hit his car two blocks away at Morgan and Kohler to stop him. At this time, their condition is unknown. Tonawanda Police Captain Fredric Foels tells 7 Eyewitness News officers responded to reports of a drive-by shooting about 1 a.m. in the 200 block of Morgan Street.
Foels was shot at for the first time in his career. A detective, who police sources have identified as detective David Ljiljanich, was shot in the pelvis, groin, buttox and twice in his bullet-proof vest. Upon graduating high school, Rick joined the Air force in 1992 and served his country through 2001 where he also received his degree in Meteorology. The suspect led cops on a chase which ended on busy I-440 loop. The suspect is dead. He helped move the officer who was shot to safety. When officers arrived, they found a man shot in the street. Two officers began to pursue the suspect, and were able to take him into custody two blocks away from the original incident after ramming into the suspect’s car.Here is the center of the crime scene. The suspect shot at an officer who tried to spike his tires and a gunfight ensued. What started as an off-duty cop being shot later evolved into an armed standoff leaving a suspect dead. Three MNPD officers were involved in the reported exchange of gunfire.
