This application of eWater’s software helped to build an ongoing capability to determine how water levels and conditions in the Yarra River affect dissolved oxygen concentrations and fish, and how river flows can be managed to reduce the risk of hypoxia under a range of scenarios related to current and future climate conditions and land use. The Future Directions Plan and Recreation Guidelines for the Lower Yarra River, reaching from Dights Falls to Port Phillip Bay, provides a framework enabling the competing demands of all users of the river to be safely balanced while maintaining the river’s environmental values. The Yarra River runs through the catchment into Port Phillip Bay, from its source in the forested Yarra Ranges National Park on the southern slopes of the Great Dividing Range. Environmental sculptures made from natural materials reflect the island’s tranquil setting and make for a great day out. Focusing on the middle and lower reaches of the Yarra River, the project team looked at ‘hypoxia’ (too little dissolved oxygen) in relation to flow and fish-kills, and applying new software that could help the region’s river managers prevent hypoxia occurring.
The Main Yarra Trail will be closed at Burnley Harbour, between Mary Street and Barkly Avenue, due to sediment removal works under the trail. The works along the trail are expected to be completed by the end of August. Some parks are closed on days rated Severe or above. The outputs will be forecasts of frequencies, durations and geographical extent of hypoxia events in the lower-middle Yarra River, and predicted ecological outcomes with respect to fish.
