Temescal Canyon lies within the city limits of Los Angeles and is a very popular “getaway” hike and workout if you have only a short amount of time.
i did the loop plus Inspiration Point and Ranchero Ridge in 4 hours. Started around 4 and right from the start heard lots of birds and other animals and saw many bunnies. I think the view is okay, if you only want to see the Pacific Ocean and some mountain, it’s really unnecessary to do this long trail. I'll say. Only one spot for you to take a rest. Then it turns around, where you climb to find the the edges of Will Rogers Park - CLOSED. Maybe not recommended. I think my umbrella save my life.
However, I don’t think dogs are allowed because I was yelled at last time I was there!I enjoy this one when I want a longer hike but not too strenuous. The trail is primarily used for hiking and running and is accessible year-round. Picnic tables at Temescal make a good midway lunch and bathroom spot for this in and out hike.Great hike for the young kids.
Park on the steep street (remember to engage your parking brake!) I recommend bringing something like clif bars or trail mix that you can snack on while walking. I like that you can bring a dog on a leash. So you can try Rivas Canyon Rd. When you get there, you'll see a sign that points back and says, "Unsafe For Horses." It is hard to find without the download map and overgrowth quite a bit, but there was no one there, and had some great views.
It is not very shady though so go early and wear sunscreen! The trail is primarily used for hiking and running and is accessible year-round.Please see the park page for up to date park information: Urban trail, worn, small rocks, dusty, magnificent views of the city.Trail is now open, as well as all other trails in Will Rogers State Park. You may park inside the park gates (parking fee is $7 at time of writing) or you can park for free on the street on either Sunset or Temescal Canyon Road. If you want to just work out, maybe this is good for you. And I’ll do it again soon. I got to this one section and just kept hearing the bushes move like crazy....I’ve never turned around on a trail because I was nervous but I swear I have no idea what was in there and it seemed pretty big.
Looking past the Santa Monica bay, with Palos Verdes as a backdrop. Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out. Rivas Canyon lies between Will Rogers State Park and Temescal Gateway Park.Rivas Canyon Trail crosses the ridge east of Temescal Canyon and travels down rustic Rivas Canyon to connect the two parks on a single-track that is 2.1 miles from end to end with 480 feet of elevation between the high and low points of the trail. It was due to not stoping completely at the sign. Lots of sections still blooming. I went on this trail in January and was glad I started (8am) early, because it gets crowded by 10:30 in the parking lot and trail. It was nice hiking with very few people in the park, but definitely not worth it the $300 that I will have to pay.
I went three times in one week and got three tickets in the mail.
We clocked this closer to 15 miles than the 13.6 that AllTrails quotes.Turn off your ad blocker to see a map of this trailWill Rogers State Park to Ray Miller Via Backbone TrailLeacock Memorial, Temescal Ridge and Bienveneda Trail Loop Then the trail rambles, then it begins to descend into the valley. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, nature trips, and bird watching and is accessible year-round.FYI there is a trail closure and you will not be able to hike the full loop. That's the law in California. The 141 acres of Temescal Gateway Park include easy-to-moderate trails for hiking, picnic tables, grassy areas, restrooms, a camp store, meeting rooms, an auditorium and classrooms. A few good views along the way.
Please bring adequate sun protection and water if you are going to attempt this trail. I’m glad I did it. But so very green, so lush, and birds singing. However, the Temescal - Will Rodgers sections of the trail are also the busiest and may be very crowded on a nice weekend. I don’t think I will ever do it again, personally.Overgrown in sections but great distance and can get away from the crowds.
