Though her style is a little disjointed, it is singularly enjoyable. The shy & unassuming Miss Pettigrew suddenly acquires enough social skills to combat gaslighting brutes and help the hapless society gals out of their self-made predicaments. The dialogue sparkles and Miss Pettigrew's thoughts illuminate the difference between the two life styles.
I am sure it will make a brilliant film which will make Miss Pettigrew's brand of wisdom available to a wider audience. It's a bit more shocking in places (the movie overlooked the cocaine and the illegitimate children,) a bit less in others (Edythe, for example, is still morally on the gray side, but she's not an antagonist,) and there's a lot more detail into the minds and feelings of the characters. Two women diametrically opposed in all ways such wealth and class, character (unworldly) and many meet by accident and spend 24 hours together in a fun plot with well-drawn characters.
