The trail gains 1,400 feet in 2 miles which makes for a steep climb, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. Super foggy, but still beautiful views. Chimney Top Trail is a 0.6 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Denniston, Kentucky that features a great forest setting and is good for all skill levels. Trail Conditions – 1.5. Renovations include: construction of rock steps, renovating existing water drainage systems, creating new ones and redefining different sections of the trail that were no longer suitable for hikers. Parts of the hike are definitely strenuous, and several times I told my husband I wanted to turn around b/c my legs couldn't take it [it's steep and rocky at some places and we were going very fast so we could get back down the trail before it got dark]. This is approximately the halfway mark of the trail.

It was a short, easy trail but sooo worth it! At Beech Flats, the Chimney Tops Trail crosses the Road Prong Trail that in turn leads to the Appalachian Trail at Indian Gap 2.3 miles away. Once you’ve reached the top, enjoy the view of a lifetime. Enjoy the woodland forest as you delve into the stories and lore hidden in the hills for centuries. While no technical gear was needed, a climb was necessary to reach the capstones.
